Banton is a fifth-class municipality in the province of Romblon. It is a member of the Maghali Group of Islands or the Tres Islas composed of Sibale, Simara and Banton. Banton is composed of the main island of Banton and the un-inhabited islets of Bantoncillo, Carlota and Isabel. The inhabitants of the island are called Bantoanon and they speak “Asi” dialect. Banton is derived from the word “Bantoon” which means Rocky in Asi. The main source of income of the Bantoanons are copra making and fishing. According to 2015 census, Banton has a population of little more than 5,000 only.
